Merlin floating licenses

Merlin license fileJust bought a single user license for Merlin.  I have two macs at different locations and would like to use Merlin on both of them. Can I install my single user Merlin license on both of them?

Yes. Merlin licenses are floating licenses. This means you may install Merlin and the licenses purchased on as many Macs as you like but only concurrently use the number you have purchased. We compare this to reading a book; many people may read the same book but only one after the other and not at the same time.

This means also: If you buy a 3 user license and install it on 5 Macs, you can use 3 Merlin sessions at the max, running on any of these Macs.

  1. Hello, I’ve been emailing support back and forth about this, but thought it might be useful to post the issue here as well:

I’ve purchased a 5-user Merlin2 license, but am only able to use one at the moment, even on two different Macs. When I try to install / enter/use the subsequent licenses, Merlin tells me that it’s already installed – even if that computer is at that moment running the trial version.

It’s really quite confusing and difficult to get my head around how to use the subsequent licenses.

    Any help would be great!

    Thank you! 🙂

  2. If Merlin tells you your Merlin license is already installed, there is no need to re-install it.

It is very strange that your licenses are not working on your macs as they should.
Could it be that they are corrupted by the email transfer? Or you have enabled advanced features which require additional licenses (like web or iphone sharing) which lock your current instant in a demo state?

I see you are in contact with our support team, so I am confident this will be solved very soon.

    Best regards, Vicky

  3. Hi
I purchased merlin about a month ago. It has been working fine until today. My mac froze and merlin is the culprit, totally unresponsive and would not even force quit on command. had to hard reboot to reinstate function. upon reboot merlin restarted but only in “demo” mode, will not save or allow work on existing files. Merlin insists that my copy is unlicensed, i have reinstaled th elicence, rebooted mac and restarted merlin.. no change. NOT IMPRESSED.. please help

  4. When an application starts, it informs the network about its licensing information.
When an application quits, it informs the network that this information is not anymore active, so the licensing info gets removed.

If a Mac freezes while an application runs and the mac gets restarted, the licensing information of that app remains open and active in the network.

So when the user restarts the app, a licensing conflict might occur.

So… at the moment of your comment, your Merlin license was in such a state.

You may either wait for the time out (5 min) releasing the open license in the network, or do a shut down, wait for a minute and re-start your Mac (this also releases the open licensing info in the network).

It is 9 hours after your comment, that means the ‘demo’ restriction of your license is not applying and your license is working as expected.

    Best regards, Vicky

  5. Yes, it applies to the Merlin for Mac OS X application.

Merlin Server licenses apply to a Merlin Server installation and do not contain any lic information for Merlin for Mac OS X application.
