My Project Potion interview with AVTechnology.com Editor Kevin Hogan on emerging telepresence technology went live this week.  For those of you (like me) who are not hip to the new AV lingo, “emerging telepresence technology” can be interpreted as new video conferencing stuff. It was a rare thing for me to be able to interview Kevin, not just because he had a lot of insightful information and ideas about what changes we should expect in the way of AV tech impacting our ability to communicate with teams in other countries, but also because Kevin is one of my oldest and closest friends. There were a few signal dropouts in the recording, but whaddaya gonna do – it ‘s Skype. You can find the video here.

This week I also had the opportunity to interview Frank Illenberger, Lead Developer for ProjectWizards. We discussed WWDC, the iPad, the iPhone4 and how those devices may impact the project management workscape. The video should be live in the next few days.

For me, the iPad has definitely changed my approach to work and I’ll be posting more about that in the future. The new iPhone is pretty cool, and the resolution really makes the Merlin Gantt Charts pop, but as a device, I’ve yet to have the same reaction I have every time I use the iPad.

If you are a PM and have started to use the iPad instead of a laptop, I’d love to know which apps you are using and what you think of it as a productivity tool.

In the coming days we’ll be posting the first chapter of my Art of War series here on the PW blog. I’m very psyched about this because there is no toolset I turn to more than The Art of War when it comes to managing projects.  So, if you are interested in this, please check back.

Here are two things worth checking out from this week…

  1. The  Parallel Project Training podcast interview/debate with Lindsay Scott, Elizabeth Harrin and Owain Wilson on whether or not Social Media is a waste of time.
  2. In the next Project Potion, Bas de Baar and I will be discussing some of the ideas references in his blog posting on Cloud Workers. Bas raises some interesting ideas about how the capabilities provided by the cloud is changing the game of project management.

  1. Hi

Thanks for the name check. I am interested in your experience with iPhone and iPad apps. We are exploring it as a deliver mechanism for project management training and development. I would welcome any views on this idea.

  2. Hi Paul,

    Thanks for your feedback.

Merlin already has an iPhone version that does some very cool things which make it unique. You can post updates, open files that have been stored as elements, update the plan remotely, even see the Gantt chart. If you’d like to learn more about it, please read through Vicky’s post here -> http://bit.ly/cxHrA4

As for the iPad, our developers are already working on tuning Merlin to wok on the device and take advantage of what it can do. Stay tuned for more info on it.

    Thanks,

    Dave
