Merlin – publishing projects for collaboration with other Merlin users

We have explained in the past how to share your projects with Merlin or Merlin Server for access over a web browser or iOS access. This post and the contained screencast shows how to share a project over your Merlin for Mac OS X application for collaboration with other Merlin users.

To start publishing…

  • On one of your Macs you open the Merlin project in your Merlin for Mac OS X application
  • Call File > Publish > Project (or press the yellow horn and switch to the “Project” tab)
  • You start Project publishing by a click on ‘start’
  • Leave the project open, and its publishing on. You can click on ‘close’ to close the dialogue though.
    • Should your project be accessible only within your local network? Is so, you are done
    • Would other Merlin users need to connect over the internet? You need to forward them the blue @ symbol shown on the project publishing dialogue

To open the published project…

  • As a user on another Mac start your Merlin for Mac OS X application
  • Call File  > Remote Open
    • If you are in the same local network as the publisher Merlin application, you directly see this Mac as discovered by Bonjour
    • If you are accessing over the internet, you will need to enter the project’s address as calculated by the publisher Merlin and contained in the blue @ symbol.

Merlin: Create column sets in Merlin and select them in the web browser

In Merlin you can setup the columns individually. You may switch off the visibility of the per default displayed columns, or choose to display others. You may change their order by drag & drop on the display, and of course change their width.

As soon as you have the desired setup you can save it as a “Column Set”. To do so, ctrl (or right) click the column titles and call “Column Sets > Save…”.
Column Sets > Save…

Merlin brings up a dialogue for you to type in the name of the column set. You have the option to save Continue reading

Merlin or Merlin Server? – Sharing projects for collaboration

Merlin allows sharing for project collaboration over 2 possible ways; over the desktop application Merlin for Mac OS X or Merlin Server.

With Merlin for Mac OS X you may share projects for concurrent access by other Merlin users.

By an additional license for Merlin for Mac OS X you may enable sharing for concurrent access by users utilizing a supported web browser.

Also iPhone sharing can be enabled in Merlin for Mac OS X. It requires an optional license for Merlin and allows editing and viewing of projects on iOS devices.

Those licenses can be purchased in our shop.

Or you install Merlin Server, Continue reading

Merlin Server – Setup web access across networks

enable MerlinServerWe have described in a previous post how to share projects for iPhones, iPads and iPod touches with Merlin Server.

This post shows how to do the same for enabling access by the web browser across networks. But a bit of theory first.

Web sharing on MerlinServer…

  • uses per default port 7080 for tcp protocol.
  • requires an enabled Project Sharing service.

And the router usually blocks cross networks connections if not mentioned otherwise

Now to the practical part… Continue reading
